Frequently Asked Questions
Because the "how" of business AI varies radically by sector. Same feature, completely different contexts: an AI assistant in a clinic must refuse to give medical advice, redirect to a healthcare professional, and handle emergencies differently from an assistant in an accounting firm. An automation workflow in a law firm must respect professional secrecy, whereas the same automation in a tech company can integrate all tools without restriction.
The terminology is different (NET 30 in accounting, RAMQ in Quebec medicine, arbitration clause in law). The regulations are different (HIPAA for healthcare, OSFI for financial services, Law 25 for everyone in Quebec).
SkaLean's sector approach means: LLM models pre-fine-tuned on sector terminology, pre-built workflows for typical sector processes, and advisors who understand your business reality.
Yes. The 11 listed sectors are those for which SkaLean has developed packaged expertise (pre-configured models, pre-built workflows, specialized advisors). For any other sector, SkaLean can deploy a custom configuration: the underlying technology is the same, but the customization work is more significant during onboarding.
In practice, if your sector is not listed, your onboarding will be longer (add 5 to 10 days) and setup fees higher, because our teams build workflows and configurations from scratch rather than starting from a template.
Examples of unlisted sectors we have already deployed: food service, logistics, specialized insurance brokerage, specialized professional training. Contact us for a free feasibility assessment.
Two complementary mechanisms:
- RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation): your own internal documents are the primary source of specific terminology. If your medical practice uses specific RAMQ codes, Studio AI learns them by indexing your internal documents. If your law firm uses its own contractual formulations, they are indexed. The LLM does not guess: it cites your own documents.
- Fine-tuning (Enterprise plans): for sectors with highly specialized vocabulary (veterinary, pharmaceutical, civil engineering), SkaLean can fine-tune a base model on your specific document corpus in 2 to 5 days, improving accuracy by 15 to 30% on your specific tasks.
For the 11 supported sectors, pre-tuned models are already available from day one.
Yes, this is a design priority at SkaLean, not an optional feature. Each sector has a "compliance mode" that automatically activates the appropriate constraints:
- Healthcare Mode (HIPAA + Quebec Law 25): no patient data to non-sovereign servers, enhanced detection of medical PII data, systematic refusal to answer clinical questions without professional redirection.
- Financial Mode (OSFI + AMF): complete audit trail, enhanced encryption, no automatic investment recommendations.
- Legal Mode: enhanced client confidentiality, mandatory source citation, no definitive response on legal questions without qualification.
- Standard Mode (GDPR + Law 25): applicable to all sectors by default.
These modes are activated during onboarding by your SkaLean advisor, not by you.
Yes, with the support of a SkaLean advisor. Sector configurations are not locks: they are starting points. If you are a wealth manager (financial services) but find that the "professional services" configuration better matches your daily reality, your advisor can merge the two configurations or use one as a base and the other as a complement.
The only constraint is regulatory: if your sector is subject to specific regulations (HIPAA, OSFI), these constraints apply regardless of the chosen configuration and cannot be disabled.
The sector starting point is there to accelerate your deployment (pre-built templates reduce onboarding by 50%), not to lock you into a rigid framework.
Four levels of sector customization:
- System prompts: the AI's character and base instructions are adapted. A medical assistant has an instruction to direct the user immediately to the emergency room in case of urgent symptoms. A legal assistant has an instruction to give no definitive legal opinion without recommending a consultation.
- Pre-built workflows: typical sector automations are available from day one: appointment reminders for clinics, prospect qualification workflow for firms, invoice follow-up workflow for accountants.
- Seeded knowledge base: for certain sectors, SkaLean provides pre-indexed public reference documents (IFRS standards, public case law, public health protocols) to complement your internal documents.
- Priority native integrations: connectors to the most-used software in your sector are configured as a priority during onboarding (for example, Clinicmaster for clinics, Clio for law firms, QuickBooks for accountants).
